Whether it is a family holiday, a swimming lesson or a trip to the beach, modest swimwear lets you enjoy the water with confidence. This guide covers what to wear in different settings, what makes swimwear safe, and what to check before you travel. For choosing a full burkini, see our burkini guide.

Why proper swimwear fabric matters

Modest swimwear is made from swimwear fabrics such as nylon–elastane or chlorine-resistant polyester. These do not soak up water. Cotton leggings, T-shirts, abayas and other everyday clothes absorb water, become very heavy and can drag a swimmer down – which is why pools ban them. Loose, heavy fabric is a real drowning risk in the sea, too.

What to wear where

  • Public pools: most pools in the UK, US, Canada and Australia accept burkinis or modest swim sets made from swimwear fabric. If in doubt, ask the pool in advance.
  • Women-only sessions: many leisure centres run ladies-only swims with female lifeguards – find one in our women-only swimming listings.
  • Beaches: a full burkini or swim leggings, long-sleeve rash guard and swim hijab. Choose bright colours so you can be seen in the water.
  • Hotel pools abroad: rules vary. Some resorts, particularly in parts of Europe, have had restrictions on full-coverage swimwear in the past. Check the hotel’s policy before booking, or look for Muslim-friendly resorts with private pools.

Sun protection

Look for a UPF 50+ rating, which blocks about 98% of UV rays. Covered skin still needs protecting at the edges – apply sunscreen to the face, hands and feet, and reapply after swimming.

Fit and comfort

  • A tunic that reaches mid-thigh keeps the suit modest when wet without adding too much drag.
  • A slightly thicker or textured fabric clings less.
  • Wear a sports swimsuit or bikini underneath for extra support.
  • Rinse in cool fresh water after each swim to protect the fabric from chlorine and salt.

Holiday packing list

  • Two swim sets, so one can dry
  • Swim hijab or hood
  • Quick-dry cover-up or kaftan for walking around the pool
  • Water shoes and a UPF sun hat

Frequently asked questions

Can I swim in leggings and a T-shirt?

Not in most pools. Cotton clothes absorb water and are banned for hygiene and safety. Use swimwear-fabric leggings and a rash guard instead.

Does modest swimwear cling when wet?

Good-quality suits are designed to minimise clinging, especially with a longer tunic and textured fabric.

Are burkinis banned anywhere?

Some French towns attempted bans in 2016; France’s highest administrative court suspended one of these bans. Rules at private pools and hotels still vary, so check ahead.
