For wudu (ablution) to be valid, water must reach the nails. Ordinary nail polish forms a waterproof layer, so many Muslim women only wear it during their period or remove it before praying. “Breathable” or “halal” nail polish claims to solve this. Does it?
Why ordinary polish is a problem
Standard nail polish dries into a solid film that stops water reaching the nail. Scholars agree that wudu or ghusl performed with a waterproof barrier on the nails is not valid.
How breathable polish works
Breathable polishes use polymer formulas designed to be permeable to oxygen and water vapour – similar in idea to contact lenses. Brands such as Inglot (O2M), 786 Cosmetics, Tuesday in Love and others market their polishes as water-permeable, often citing laboratory tests.
What scholars say
- Some scholars accept breathable polish if reliable, independent testing shows that water itself reaches the nail during a normal wudu.
- Others, including the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America (AMJA), are cautious. They argue that wudu requires water to wet the nail, not merely vapour passing through slowly, and that current evidence is not strong enough. They advise removing polish before wudu.
If you are unsure, follow the view of a scholar you trust, or remove polish for prayer.
Practical tips
- Use only the breathable polish – a regular base coat or top coat will block water.
- Apply thin coats; thick layers reduce permeability.
- Some brands recommend rubbing water over the nails during wudu – check the maker’s guidance.
- Look for halal certification, which also covers ingredients such as animal-derived pigments.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pray with normal nail polish?
Only if you applied it after making wudu and the wudu is still valid. You must remove it before your next wudu.
Is breathable nail polish halal?
Its ingredients may be halal-certified. Whether it allows valid wudu is a matter of scholarly difference.
Is henna a problem for wudu?
No. Henna stains the nail rather than forming a layer, so it does not block water.
