Most marshmallows get their bounce from gelatin – and in the UK and US, that gelatin is usually from pork. The good news: halal and gelatin-free marshmallows are now easy to find.

Why most marshmallows are not halal

Gelatin whips air into the sugar mixture and sets it. Mainstream brands such as Jet-Puffed and Campfire, and most supermarket own-brand marshmallows, use pork gelatin. Always check the ingredients – recipes vary by country.

Halal marshmallow options

  • Halal beef gelatin: brands such as Ziyad (US) make marshmallows with halal-certified beef gelatin.
  • Fish gelatin: some brands, such as Bay Melow, use fish gelatin and carry halal certification.
  • Vegan marshmallows: Dandies, Freedom Confectionery (UK) and some supermarket vegan ranges use plant-based setting agents like carrageenan or tapioca starch instead of gelatin.

Availability changes, so check the label and halal logo each time you buy.

Are vegan marshmallows halal?

They contain no animal gelatin, so most scholars would consider them halal. Two things to check: flavourings (some use alcohol as a solvent – see our note on vanilla extract) and colours such as carmine (E120).

Toasting and baking

Beef and fish gelatin marshmallows toast much like standard ones. Vegan versions tend to melt faster, so hold them a little further from the flame.
