Every marriage has difficult seasons. Searches for “Muslim marriage counseling” and “marriage counseling in Islam” show that many couples want help from someone who understands both relationships and their faith. Seeking help early is a sign of strength, and Islam encourages reconciliation between spouses. This guide explains how Muslim marriage counselling works.
Islam and seeking help
The Quran describes spouses as garments for one another (2:187) and encourages appointing arbiters from both families when couples face conflict (4:35). Today, a trained counsellor can play a similar role: a neutral person who helps both of you communicate and find a way forward.
What is Muslim marriage counselling?
It is couples therapy from a counsellor who is Muslim or has experience with Muslim clients. Sessions use recognised approaches – such as Gottman-based or emotionally focused therapy – while respecting your values, family structures and religious boundaries. Some counsellors include Islamic guidance if you want it; others refer you to an imam for religious questions.
What to look for in a counsellor
- Professional qualifications. In the UK, look for membership of BACP, UKCP or NCPS. In the US and Canada, look for a state or provincial licence, such as LMFT, LPC or registered psychotherapist.
- Couples experience. Ask how much couples work they do.
- Cultural and religious understanding. Ask how they approach faith in sessions.
- Confidentiality. Especially important in close-knit communities. Ask how your information is stored and shared.
- Gender and format. Some couples prefer a counsellor of a particular gender, or online sessions for privacy.
Imam, counsellor or both?
An imam can give religious guidance on rights and responsibilities. A qualified counsellor is trained in communication, conflict and mental health. Many couples benefit from both.
When to seek help urgently
If there is abuse, violence or threats, your safety comes first. Couples counselling is not recommended where abuse is happening. Contact your local emergency number or a domestic abuse helpline.
