For many Muslim women, a female personal trainer is the key to exercising comfortably – someone who understands modesty, prayer times, fasting and training around pregnancy and family life. But anyone can call themselves a trainer online, so qualifications matter.
Qualifications to check
- UK: look for a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification and membership of CIMSPA (the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity), which took over the old REPs register. CIMSPA membership shows a trainer meets the sector’s professional standard.
- US: recognised certifications include NASM, ACE, ACSM and NSCA. These require an exam and ongoing continuing education.
- Canada: CSEP (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology) or canfitpro.
- Australia: a Certificate IV in Fitness and registration with AUSactive or Fitness Australia.
Also ask about first aid/CPR and insurance. If you are pregnant, postpartum or in menopause, look for a trainer with a specialist qualification in pre- and postnatal or women’s fitness.
Where to train
- At home: many trainers visit your home with portable equipment – the most private option.
- Private studios: small studios can often guarantee a women-only space at set times.
- Women-only gyms: many have in-house female PTs.
- Online coaching: video sessions and app-based programmes, useful if there is no female trainer nearby.
Questions to ask before you book
- What are your qualifications, and are you registered with a professional body?
- Have you worked with Muslim women or clients who train in hijab?
- Can you work around prayer times and adapt training during Ramadan?
- How will you measure progress – and do you avoid extreme diets?
Red flags
Be wary of trainers who promise rapid weight loss, push very low-calorie diets without a dietitian’s input, or sell supplements as part of every plan.
